    A national scale inventory of resource provision for biodiversity within domestic gardens

    The human population is increasingly disconnected from nature due to urbanisation. To counteract this phenomenon, the UK government has been actively promoting wildlife gardening. However, the extent to which such activities are conducted and the level of resource provision for biodiversity (e.g., food and nesting sites) within domestic gardens remains poorly documented. Here we generate estimates for a selection of key resources provided within gardens at a national scale, using 12 survey datasets gathered across the UK. We estimate that 22.7 million households (87% of homes) have access to a garden. Average garden SiZe is 190 m(2), extrapolating to a total area of 432,924 ha. Although substantial, this coverage is still an order of magnitude less than that of statutory protected areas. Approximately 12.6 million (48%) households provide supplementary food for birds, 7.4 million of which specifically use bird feeders. Similarly, there are a minimum of 4.7 million nest boxes within gardens. These figures equate to one bird feeder for every nine potentially feeder-using birds in the UK, and at least one nest box for every six breeding pairs of cavity nesting birds. Gardens also contain 2.5-3.5 million ponds and 28.7 million trees, which is just under a quarter of all trees occurring outside woodlands. Ongoing urbanisation, characterised by increased housing densities, is inevitable throughout the UK and elsewhere. The important contribution domestic gardens make to the green space infrastructure in residential areas must be acknowledged, as their reduction will impact biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, and the well-being of the human population

    Drivers of predator killing by rural residents and recommendations for fostering coexistence in agricultural landscapes

    Predators inhabiting human-dominated landscapes are vulnerable to various anthropogenic actions, including people killing them. We assess potential drivers of predator killing in an agricultural landscape in southern Chile, and discuss the implications for policies and interventions to promote coexistence. We evaluate five different types of motivation: (i) sociodemographics and household economy; (ii) livestock loss; (iii) predator encounter rates; (iv) knowledge of legal protection (all native predators are currently protected); and, (v) tolerance to livestock predation. As the killing of native predators is illegal, the prevalence of this behaviour by rural residents was estimated using a symmetrical forced-response randomised response technique (RRT), a method designed to ask sensitive questions. A total of 233 rural residents from randomly assigned sample units (4 km2) across the study region completed our questionnaire. More conspicuous species, such as hawks (Falconiformes sp), foxes (Lycalopex sp) and free-roaming domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), were killed by a higher proportion of farmers than more cryptic species, like the felid güiña (Leopardus guigna), skunk (Conepatus chinga) and pumas (Puma concolor). The proportion of respondents admitting to killing predators was highest for hawks (mean= 0.46, SE= 0.08), foxes (mean= 0.29, SE= 0.08) and dogs (mean= 0.30, SE= 0.08) and lowest for güiña (mean= 0.10, SE = 0.09), which is the only species of conservation concern we examine (considered Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List). From our five motivation categories, past killing of predators was associated with higher reported predator encounter rates (guina, hawks), lower tolerance to livestock predation (hawks, dogs), higher reported livestock loss (dogs) and sociodemographics and household economy (foxes). Our results demonstrate that a one-size-fits-all approach to predator persecution is unlikely to reduce or eliminate illegal killings for the suite of species we examined. We identify and describe two main types of intervention that could foster coexistence, improvement of livestock management and domestic dog management in rural areas, as well as discussing the potential for social marketing

    Successfully translating conservation research into practice and policy: concluding thoughts

    In the Anthropocene, when our environment is changing rapidly and the windows of opportunity for action to prevent further biodiversity loss are narrow, conservation researchers are increasingly encouraged to think and operate beyond the traditional approaches of producing peer-reviewed papers and presenting results to other members of the research community. Indeed, the perception that researchers belong in their ivory tower, from which they deliver evidence for others to interpret, disseminate and use in decision-making, is thankfully now widely recognised as outdated. The rise of fake news, a deliberate lack of consideration for scientific evidence, and changes to the ways of assessing the value of researchers’ work probably all play a role in supporting this shift in perception. Moreover, for many researchers, the prospect of their work ‘making a difference’ and having an impact on wider society is at least as great a motivation for doing research as generating new knowledge, however interesting that may be

White-tailed eagles were historically much more widely distributed than they are today (Yalden, 2007), once breeding across much of Europe, but by the early twentieth century the species was extinct across much of western and southern Europe. The main cause of its decline was persecution by farmers and shepherds, who considered the eagles a threat to their livestock, but, along with other raptors, white-tailed eagles were also seriously affected by DDT in the 1960s and 1970s, which had disastrous effects on the breeding success of remaining populations

    What motivates the masses: understanding why people contribute to conservation citizen science projects

    Participation in conservation citizen science projects is growing rapidly and approaches to project design are diversifying. There has been a recent shift towards projects characterised by contributors collecting data in isolation and submitting findings online, with little training or opportunities for direct social interaction with other citizen scientists. While research is emerging on developing citizen science projects by optimising technological modalities, little consideration has been given to understanding what motivates individuals to voluntarily contribute data. Here, we use the Volunteer Functions Inventory, combined with open-ended questions, to demonstrate that the two strongest motivations underpinning participation, for both individuals who contribute data systematically (regularly; n=177) and opportunistically (ad hoc basis; n=218), are ‘Values’ and ‘Understanding’. People take part in such projects because they have an intrinsic value for the environment and want to support research efforts (representing ‘Values’), as well as wanting to learn and gain knowledge (signifying ‘Understanding’). Unlike more traditional citizen science projects that involve specific training and considerable time investments, contributors to these newer types of project are not motivated by the potential to develop their career or opportunities for social interaction. The person36 level characteristics of contributors considered in this study did not reliably forecast levels of motivation, suggesting that predicting high levels of motivation is inherently more complex than is often speculated. We recommend avenues for future research that may further enhance our understanding of contributor motivations and the characteristics that may underpin levels of motivation

    Methods for assessment of patient adherence to removable orthoses used after surgery or trauma to the appendicular skeleton:a systematic review

    Background:&nbsp;Patient adherence to treatment is a key determinant of outcome for healthcare interventions. Whilst non-adherence has been well evidenced in settings such as drug therapy, information regarding patient adherence to orthoses, particularly in the acute setting, is lacking. The aim of this systematic review was to identify, summarise, and critically appraise reported methods for assessing adherence to removable orthoses in adults following acute injury or surgery. Methods:&nbsp;Comprehensive searches of the Ovid versions of MEDLINE, Embase, AMED, CINAHL, Central, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and SPORTDiscus identified complete papers published in English between 1990 and September 2018 reporting measurement of adherence to orthoses in adults following surgery or trauma to the appendicular skeleton. Only primary studies with reference to adherence in the title/abstract were included to maintain the focus of the review. Data extraction included study design, sample size, study population, orthosis studied, and instructions for use. Details of methods for assessing adherence were extracted, including instrument/method used, frequency of completion, number of items (if applicable), and score (if any) used to evaluate adherence overall. Validity and reliability of identified methods were assessed together with any conclusions drawn between adherence and outcomes in the study. Results:&nbsp;Seventeen papers (5 randomised trials, 10 cohort studies, and 2 case series) were included covering upper (n&nbsp;=&thinsp;13) and lower (n&nbsp;=&thinsp;4) limb conditions. A variety of methods for assessing adherence were identified, including questionnaires (n&nbsp;=&thinsp;10) with single (n&nbsp;=&thinsp;3) or multiple items (n&nbsp;=&thinsp;7), home diaries (n&nbsp;=&thinsp;4), and discussions with the patient (n&nbsp;=&thinsp;3). There was no consistency in the target behaviour assessed or in the timing or frequency of assessment or the scoring systems used. None of the measures was validated for use in the target population. Conclusions:&nbsp;Measurement and reporting of adherence to orthosis use is currently inconsistent. Further research is required to develop a measurement tool that provides a rigorous and reproducible assessment of adherence in this acute population.     Blood basophils from cystic fibrosis patients with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis are primed and hyper-responsive to stimulation by aspergillus allergens

    AbstractIntroductionFifteen to sixty percent of cystic fibrosis patients harbor Aspergillus fumigatus (Af) in their airways (CF-AC) and some will develop allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (CF-ABPA). Since basophils play a key role in allergy, we hypothesized that they would display alterations in CF-ABPA patients compared to CF-AC or patients without Af colonization (CF).MethodsUsing flow cytometry, we measured CD203c, CD63 and CD123 levels on basophils from CF-ABPA (N=11), CF-AC (N=14), and CF (N=12) patients before and after ex vivo stimulation with Af allergens.ResultsBaseline CD203c was increased in basophils from CF-ABPA compared to CF-AC and CF patients. Af extract and recombinant Aspf1 stimulated basophils from CF-ABPA patients to markedly upregulate CD203c, along with modest upregulation of CD63 and a CD123 downward trend. Plasma TARC/CCL17 at baseline and post-stimulation cell supernatant histamine levels were similar in the three groups.ConclusionsIn CF-ABPA, blood basophils are primed and hyperresponsive to Af allergen stimulation

    Robotics and Automated Systems for Environmental Sustainability: Monitoring Terrestrial Biodiversity

    It is critical to protect Earth’s biodiversity, not just for its own intrinsic value, but also for the ecosystem services it underpins. Yet biodiversity is in crisis, with up to 1 million animal and plant species at risk of extinction, many within decades. This dire projection has captured world attention and triggered major mitigation efforts, but we are faced with problems in assessing global trends in biodiversity – which species, taxa, habitats and ecosystems are suffering the greatest declines? Are current mitigation measures having any positive impact? To answer key questions such as these, ecologists are seeking the help of robotics and automated systems (RAS) experts in the monumental task of attempting to monitor the state of biodiversity.In this White Paper, we have surveyed recent literature and consulted more than 120 international expert ecologists and engineers working in the fields of biodiversity and robotics. We have done this to evaluate the potential for developing robotic and autonomous systems that could massively extend the scope of terrestrial biodiversity monitoring across habitats globally. The complexities of biodiversity itself, and the many barriers and challenges that must be overcome in monitoring it, are formidable. We assess each of these barriers in turn, highlighting currently available RAS solutions, as well as nascent technologies that may be relevant to future RAS for biodiversity (RAS-BD) monitoring. Using this information, we have drawn up a roadmap of actions needed to address the barriers that should be easiest to overcome. Encouragingly, we find that a variety of existing RAS capabilities may be transferable to a biodiversity monitoring context. Beyond these are the harder barriers, where promising novel ideas being researched at UK universities and research institutes may, in time, become integral parts of future RAS-BD monitoring technology. We believe that RAS-BD technology has great potential to complement and considerably extend the field survey work undertaken by expert human observers. In the UK, we are fortunate in having particular strengths in both biodiversity and robotics research; as a nation we are in an ideal position to integrate them and become a leading force in the development and application of RAS-BD monitoring. To this end, we propose these recommendations that we hope will guide future government strategy in an area that is vital to the future of humanity:● The creation and funding of an integrated multidisciplinary task force, including academics and industry specialists with expertise in RAS and biodiversity, to support technological research and development.● Future UK funding and focus should be prioritised to utilise existing RAS capabilities to develop first generation RAS-BD technology for monitoring biodiversity.● Relevant nascent technologies being researched by numerous UK academic teams need increased and accelerated research and development funding to turn pioneering concepts into enhanced RAS-BD technology suited to overcoming the hardest monitoring barriers that ecologists encounter.● Education strategies should be developed to foster links between aspiring engineers, biologists andcomputer technologists, both in the curriculum of schools, and at later stages in universities and research facilities
